30 Creative Ways to Save Money in September (and all year long)

1. Fall is around the corner. ‘Spring clean’ at the start of each season – and take unwanted items to local thrift shops or host a yard sale to help you make money on clothing and items that would otherwise collect dust.

2. Shop the off season. Buy jackets in the summer and grills in the winter.

3. Be a cheap date. Check out what is going on in your area when making plans for the weekend. There are numerous free concerts, museums and events that could be fun with a date or friends.

4. Make a shopping list on your smartphone before you head out to shop for the week. Lists trim impulse buying and make it easier to search for coupons ahead of time. This goes along with menu planning!

5. Never leave a store without giving the clearance aisle a once-over. Plus, many stores even allow you to use coupons on clearance items.

6. Save on your coffee and tea habit. Bring your own brew to work to save you up to $1,000 a year.

7. Get dialed in to savings. Shop around for the best phone plan for your family – there are a host of options today ranging from monthly plans from traditional phone companies and cable services to pay-per-use options from VoIP telephone services.

8. Transfer prescriptions to pharmacies that offer coupons and loyalty programs.

9. Look for dining deals with an app that shows what’s nearby to cut down on gas consumption. Around town, sensible driving can save 5 percent– up to 24 gallons of gasoline or $91. Two out of three consumers say they have changed the way they purchase, including how and what they buy as a result of high gas prices.

10. Plan your meals at the beginning of the week and utilize your grocery stores’ savings flyers to make the most of your groceries.

11. If you don’t have a coupon, try generic brands of items you buy regularly. One third of consumers have started buying generic brands as opposed to the name brand products, and still find that the products taste/function the same. Personally we love the Wegman’s generic brand of everything!

12. Perform regular maintenance on your vehicles to avoid costly repairs. Many local businesses offer maintenance coupons on tires, oil changes and more so always check for print and online offers before scheduling service visits.

13. Automatically sneak cash into a ‘rainy day fund’ from checking into savings after each pay day – you probably won’t notice it’s missing, and you’ll be saving without even thinking about it.

14. Dine on a dime. After paying off debt, 27 percent of consumers say the next thing they spend their money on is dining out – look for local dining coupons to try new menu items and cut your bill in half.

15. If you’re really thrifty, you can reuse the wax paper liner that cereal comes in. It comes right out of the box and it’s clean.

16. Always check for coupon promo codes before committing to your online shopping purchase.

17. Check daily deals in your area for bargains on everything from the things you need to fun activities for the family, such as martial arts classes and bounce house party rentals.

18. Ditch the “junk in the trunk.” An extra 100 pounds in the trunk cuts a typical vehicle‘s fuel economy by up to 2 percent. You can save up to 9 gallons of gasoline per year – almost $40 – by removing an extra 100 pounds of unneeded items from the trunk.

19. Make timeless, not trendy, updates to your home to avoid being outdated in just a few years. Thirty-two percent of consumers are planning to spend money on interior improvements to their homes, and home improvement is one of the most coupon-active industries.

20. Dry your razor blades after use or store them in alcohol – they’ll last a lot longer.

21. Learn basic sewing skills to repair gently-used clothing yourself. There are great how-to resources available online to learn how to sew on a missing button or hem a pair of pants. Advanced savings enthusiasts save a bundle by tailoring and designing clothes from the wealth of secondhand clothing at garage sales, thrift shops and clothing swaps.

22. Get fancy for free. Most hair and nail salons offer discounts for first-time customers – try out a new place and save on costs.

23. Use cash instead of credit cards when you go out. It’s easier to split the bill or share a cab, and when you see and touch the money you are using, it makes it harder to spend frivolously.

24. Avoid buyer’s remorse by following the 24-hour rule on splurges. If you find something you love, take a day to see where you can cut back in other areas and make sure it’s worth the cost.

25. Hold the phone. Pick the right mobile phone plan and check your usage. You could be using less than the minutes and texts messages included in your current package.

26. Expect the unexpected with appliances and you can save on service costs. Submit product registrations for new appliances and file the warranty card and receipt so you can find them when something goes wrong down the road.

27. Compare prices when booking travel or hotel stays. The lowest prices can often be buried or omitted in search results, especially if you bundle your package. Compare sites to ensure the lowest prices.

28. Borrow your books – check them out from a library or find ones that have been gently used. This can cut the cost of something you use once by as much as half. You can even rent eReader editions or reserve books online at many public libraries.

29. Always check your Valpak Blue Envelope® for a chance to win $100 instantly. Each month, Valpak randomly selects envelopes and gives away money for free!

30. Watch Valpak’s new “Coupon Me, Baby” video to get you motivated to use coupons and save!

What are some other ways you save money on everyday purchases?

Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday from my favorite brands, Happy Birthday to me!

One more reason I like Loyalty Programs from my favorite brands MORE than couponing… the birthday gifts! So today is my birthday but all month long I have been receiving postcards and emails from my favorite brands with freebies and deals on things I would probably buy anyway. Add to that the $95 bracelet I received yesterday from Pandora for being one of the first of their club members to answer an extensive survey and I can honestly say, I have been somewhat spoiled by my favorite brands.

So what I have I got so far?

1. Free drink of my choice from Starbucks – I went to order it yesterday and the clerk gave me a Venti (I never order a Venti) sized Coconut Mocha Frappacino that certainly hit the spot on a 100 degree day! (Value $5.45 since the clerk gave me the biggest size)

2. Philosophy Body Wash as a gift from Sephora’s Beauty Insider program. This body wash smells so yummy! (Value – $16)

3. Coldwater Creek – $20 off any purchase, no minimum. Since Coldwater Creek is having a huge sale this weekend too, I am going to get my money’s worth from this one! (Value – $20)

4. Chico’s – $10 off any purchase, no minimum. I will wait until they have a good sale and then use the coupon. (Value – $10)

5. Panera Bread – Free Pastry of my choice. Panera has one of the best loyalty programs anyhow – they are always surprising me with freebies from smoothies to sandwiches on my card which comes in handy for days where I need a change of pace and take my laptop there to work. (Value – $2.00-3.00)

6. World Market – $10 off any purchase, no minimum. I will wait until they have a good sale and then use the coupon. (Value – $10)

7. Ledo Pizza – one of our favorite local pizza chains sent me a coupon for a free 8″ pizza. Yummy! (Value – $6.00)

8. Free lunch from my favorite Noodles and Company – Indonesian Peanut Saute’ here I come! (Value – $7.00)

9. Free dessert from Logan’s Roadhouse – now this one isn’t a total freebie because you only get the dessert for free if you come in for a meal, but either way, that Apple Cobbler looks yummy! (Value – $5.00)

I have received even more Buy One Get One offers and bonus rewards points, too and the offers are still showing up!

If there are stores or restaurants that you shop at – even once in a while – it is worth joining their free loyalty programs. Sure, you are giving them what they want most – DATA – but you can get some pretty nice goodies in return – and not just on your birthday!

Clipping coupons is great, but I have found that signing up for the free rewards programs at my favorite retailers can really save our family money. If it is somewhere you shop regularly anyhow, you can only benefit.

Example #1:

For Christmas my 12 year old daughter kept asking for a fleece North Face jacket and I kept balking at it – especially with a $60 price tag. I knew I could find it at Dick’s Sporting Goods and right before Christmas (after I had already decided not to buy it) Dick’s sent me my monthly rewards envelope. Inside was a $10 rewards certificate and a stack of coupons. When I took the jacket to the register I handed the clerk all the coupons and the rewards certificate. Some of the coupons were “stackable” meaning I got a dollar amount off because the item was over $50 and I also got a percentage off because the other coupon was for 20% off outwear. Between the two coupons and the rewards certificate, I brought the jacket down from a $60 purchase to a $26 purchase – a number I was much more comfortable with – since I don’t think my daughter is done growing.

Example #2

My youngest daughter wanted the latest bear from Build a Bear Workshop - the 16 in. Pink SpeakerStarz™ Bear in Fuchsia – that has a cable built in that plugs into your iPod and the sound comes out the bear’s foot. Cute, but worth $25? Questionable. Enter the Stuff for Stuff program at BABW. I always keep the rewards certificates and the coupons they send through out the year. I had 2 $10 rewards certificates left and one coupon for $5 off and animal $10 or more (sent as a birthday reward since my daughter’s birthday is in December). They took the $5 off then I applied the rewards certificates leaving me to simply pay for the sales tax of $1. SCORE!!! A $25 Build a Bear for $1.

Most grocery store chains now have rewards programs of some sort. One of our local grocery store also sells gas. The more you shop their store for groceries, the more you can save on the gas for your car. Not a bad deal, really, especially since the gas station is right in front of the store.

As long the store or restaurant is one you use frequently AND there is no fee to sign up for the rewards program it really is a great way to save money! And rather than having all those little cards on my keychain, I just have a separate little zip bag in my purse where I keep them all. It works for me.

Have you found rewards programs to be worthwhile for your family?

Do you really need all those channels on TV? How about the newspaper and magazine subscriptions? As the nation’s economy takes a turn for the worse, many families are asking these questions and more as they evaluate their fiscal health.

Could your family survive a month of no spending? That is exactly what one family did and they ended up saving $2000 in the process. Sure it was a challenge – especially when they would have normally called in a plumber for an issue in the house (that was solved with Dawn dish detergent and boiling water) – but the entire experience ended up being a positive one. The full story is worth a read.

I know that I could not go to that extreme, cold-turkey, but just like you make little changes in your diet (giving up soda, as I did a year ago), making little changes in your family’s spending habits can have big returns over time.
