Family Movie Night Recommendation: Despicable Me

Despicable Me I just love it when a movie comes out that is truly fun to watch as a family! Right before Christmas I was sent Despicable Me (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) to review. The first time I watched it was with my daughters (9 & 12) while we were visiting family over the holidays. The second time I watched it was last night with my youngest (9) and my oldest (14 year old boy) and I have already had a request from my husband to watch it as a family over the weekend – he wants to know what the four of us have been talking about.

Despicable Me is the hilarious story of Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), the self-proclaimed “World’s Greatest Villian,” whose plan to pull off the craziest crime of the century is up ended by three cute little orphan girls.

Gru’s minions, the cute little yellow capsule like characters that are everywhere in the marketing of this movie, provide plenty of little moments of silliness perfect for keeping the little ones entertained, while the higher-level dry humor throughout the story line will keep the teens and grown ups snickering.

The girls are adorable and have every father-figure, heart-melting trick in the book in their arsenal – from holding their breath, to flashing the big old puppy dog eyes, to handing Gru a ticket to their dance recital.

Between Gru and his arch-enemy Vector, there is plenty of gadgetry and boyish humor to keep even the biggest boys glued to the screen. Just the creativity in the roller coaster is enough to make them want to watch it again – that and the ray gun that incinerates the game at the theme park. Definitely one of my favorite scenes.

Released by Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Despicable Me was the second biggest animated release in 2010. The creativity, animation, story line and humor make it one of those movies you literally can watch over and over. I rank it right up there with Cars and Toy Story!

Oh, and you have to check out the bonus features including Gru’s Rocket Builder game, three mini Minion movies (Blu-Ray only), Miss Hattie’s Top Secret Cookie Recipes, and more. If you visit my kids printables site, you can find some fun Despicable Me printable activities, too, perfect for your family movie night!
