She Put A Peanut Up Her Nose

I knew that when I started this site that I would have no shortage of tales to share - and this is one I really never expected! My 5 year old put a peanut up her nose while I was driving today!! What the heck was she thinking?? I figured that we had made it past the objects up the nose stage - I guess I was wrong.

So, she announced that “a peanut fell in her nose” knowing full well that she had put it there. I asked her if she was serious and she started crying. I made the mistake of saying that I would look at it when we got home and see if I could get it out with tweezers. This sent her off into hysterics and she started screaming that she was going to throw up. Oh, the drama.

I pulled over at the nearest fast food place and had my other daughter run in and get some napkins. We tried to get Miss N to blow her nose to get the peanut out. Nothing came out and she got more hysterical. I figured I was only minutes from the closest Urgent Care center and figured that was better than the ER.

We walked in right at closing and the receptionist let me know they were closing. Miss N was crying and I explained what happened. One of the doctors was still there and agreed to see her.

He couldn’t see anything. No peanut. My daughter was still hysterical and wouldn’t even let the doctor look up her nose with the light. It took us 10 minutes just to settle her down.

He did give me a really good potential home remedy. The doctor had me cover her mouth with mine while closing off the unobstructed nostril. Then I blew into her mouth to help force the lodged object come out. Well, we did this about 5 times and no peanut. We blew her nose again and still no peanut.

The doctor sent us home and I have to keep an eye on her. If she wakes up in the morning and is pain free, breathing clearly, and acting normal, then the peanut is probably long gone. However, if there is pain, pus, blood or excessive mucus, then I have to take her to an ENT.

I’ll keep you updated! It’s always something.

  1. I hate when this happens! I had to have my oldest daughter strapped down on a papoose board when she was about two so the ENT could extract the rock she shoved up there. She wanted to show everyone her “trophy” (saved in a bag) when we got home.

I hope your kiddo just doesn’t remember that it came out already rather than the alternative that it’s lodged further than peanuts are allowed to go.

And thanks for the reminder to check for nits. Those pesky little buggers!

  3. oh my……how was she today? Have you found the peanut?

  4. Corey - she is fine now. We think she dislodged the peanut while she was in hysterics. While cleaning out the car yesterday I found half a peanut on the floor and told her I found the peanut. She told me that the one she put up there was only a half - and that is what I found.

  6. My daughter was nine when she put a flat glass stone up her nose. (She said she was “smelling” it. )
    Yeah, okay…
We ended up in the ER, the doctor had to push a small tube into her nose, force the stone down and catch it with a spoon like device when it dropped into the back of her mouth.
    Then…
they asked her apart from me how the bead got into her nose (they said I appeared angry)
    I was angry.
Who puts stones up their nose? Am I raising a fool? And I was terrified all the way there that she would choke.
    But Good Lord…
what kind of monster would put a stone in her child’s nose????
A really nice close to the whole adventure.

  7. Karen - I am hoping my daughter learned her lesson and we won’t be having to go down that road again. I am sure the doctor looked at me funny while we were trying to get her to let us look up her nose with the light. I had to look at her and say are we going to do this the hard way or the easy way - because she is so dramatic she will try to con the doctors out of doing their job.

    Thanks for stopping in!

  8. I am really glad to read that she is fine. I’ll now be on the look out for my girl stuffing things up her nose. I had hoped at 2.5 she’d be past that stage….but I am guessing I am wrong now.

  9. I once put a rosary bead in my news and it got stucked. I scared my mother so much she was screaming and crying and scolding me all at the same time!

  10. My son and a neighbor were playing when a bean bag chair broke. The neighbor kid shoved bean bag filler into my sons ear. We got most of it out, but there was one styrofoam ball that would not come out.

For years the kid had constant ear infections. It trapped moisture in the ear. The doctors could never get the thing out because it was too large to fit, (and the pain of the infection) apparently it had been compressed and shoved in.

I spent years worrying about the thing and trying to get it out.

Finally, when he was a teen it just came out on its own. I guess the ear canal had grown or it had been worn away from our efforts. He hasn’t had an ear infection since.

Glad your story ended so quickly.

  11. Thank you for the story! My daughter just stuck a peanut up her nose 15 minutes ago, so I did a search online and found your story.
    It worked!
