Apologies for the crazy title – but I can not believe that in a span of 15 days I have gone from craving carbs, sugar, and covering everything with cheese to some one who is very happily eating sugar-free, grain-free and dairy-free! How? Why? Was it hard?
Let’s start with the WHY! For as long as I could remember, I was the kid who picked sweet treats, pasta, and carbs of any kind over any other choices presented to me. While I was young and very active, it really wasn’t a big deal. Sure I thought I was eating healthy – most of the time – but after I had my first child 17 years ago, I just never quite felt right. I always seemed to be tired, had brain fog, craved carbs, was moody – the works. And even after I started eating gluten-free, I saw some improvement, but something was still not right.
After I had my second child I was working with a nutritionist who had me do a “detox” diet for three days. It was HARD. But I felt great when I was done. So when I got so frustrated with my health this winter I started researching and looking for that detox that I did 15 years ago. In this same time frame I joined a gym and it just so happens that Dr. Oz would be on everytime I happened to be there – I love watching his show and he really does offer common sense information. I felt somewhat inspired to find a detox plan that would help me jump start a healthier eating plan.
So many of the detox plans I found were not based on real food, rather on expensive drinks, shakes and supplements – that were EXPENSIVE! No thank you!
I kept looking and came across Dr. Mark Hyman’s new book The Blood Sugar Solution 10-Day Detox Diet – I read the intro, re-read the intro, and then I knew this was the guidance I had been looking for. Dr. Hyman is famous for his expertise in functional medicine – medicine based on finding the underlying causes for disease and using a systems based approach for treating it – and is very well respected by so many in the medical field – including Dr. Oz. The whole plan is based on WHOLE food, not over processed, manufactured convenience food.
But I digress. So I ordered the 10-Day Detox Diet book, went to the grocery store to pick up a few essentials – like fresh veggies, raw nuts, and almond milk, and told myself I could do it. And guess what? Once I got past the first day, it was WAY easier than I ever thought it would be. Even my kids wanted in on it – they loved the wide variety of veggies I started making at meal time – and have been very supportive.
What I found was that my body did not feel like it was on a roller coaster any more. It was almost like I didn’t realize how bad I had been feeling until I suddenly started to feel so much better. What I didn’t realize was that my old diet was causing my insulin levels to go up and down all day long leaving me feeling sluggish, foggy and with a good case of the munchies all the time. Stabilizing your insulin levels is the main premise in Dr. Hyman’s Blood Sugar Solution series – and it is all beginning to make sense.
I know what you are dying to know. Did I lose weight? Well, honestly, that is not the primary reason I started this program, however, on about day 6 of the detox I did get on the scale and I had lost 6 lbs. I will probably weigh myself again in a few days. Even though I am technically done with the 10-Day Detox, I feel so much better that I am going to just keep going with it. In the book, Dr. Hyman does offer three levels of post-detox reintroduction depending on your level of sensitivity to the primary culprits – sugar, gluten, grains and dairy.
I am a firm believer in one solution does not fit all – we each have our own unique body chemistry, our own genetic blueprint, and our own environmental influences. What I do know is Dr. Hyman’s book has been the roadmap for the wake up call I have needed for so long.
You can expect that I will be sharing more Paleo and Low Glycemic recipes and resources, updates on how I am doing, and more thoughts on Dr. Hyman’s Blood Sugar Solution. For now, I will just say that if you have FLC (Feeling Like Crap) Syndrome, you just might want to check it out.
